WAX MELTS
What are wax melts?
We've all used and found candles, reed diffusers and others to fragrance our home. After much research we have found that some of the traditional candles, reed diffusers, sprays and more contain a lot of harmful chemicals which are not good for our health or in some cases not good for your home or your pets. Here at Halfpenny's Home Scents we have a number alternatives to adding a beautiful fragrance in to your home our wax melts is just one.
We use 100% Natural soy wax for our melts and premium fragrance oils which are suitable for vegans, they have NOT been tested on animals and are paraben free. We then combine the ingredients to make a scented, wickless piece of wax that when heated releases a fragrance throughout you home. As these can be stronger in fragrance than a scented candle people often find these a great alternative.
Wax melts tips.
If you are new to wax melts or you’ve been using wax melts for years, the amount of wax burners on the open market is huge. There will be a burner out there to suit everyone's taste. however which do you choose ?
Tealight burners.
There are 2 main types the most common one is the tealight burner. These burners will have a small chamber at the bottom where you can place your unscented tealight and a dish on the top where you place your piece of scented wax melt.
It is recommended that there is a minimum gap of 10cm between where your tealight sits in the small chamber at the bottom and the bottom of the dish where your wax melt sits, Anything smaller could result in your burner getting to hot and crack or even worse shatter.
We advise that you use at maximum a 3-4 hour tealight with any type of tealight burner. We advise this as a longer burning tealight would result in your burner possibly getting to hot, with this in mind it could cause your burner to crack or even worse shatter.
Electric burners.
These types of burners are great as there is no naked flame so rather than use a tealight to melt your wax melt they use the heat from a bulb melt instead. Most electric burners have a dish on the top for your pieces of scented wax & have a closed bottom which holds the bulb.
As they are electric most of the modern ones now come with touch technology. This is a fantastic addition as most will allow you to change the level of heat and light. A lot of these electric burners are amazingly designed with beautiful effects and lighting, so not only do they help make your home smell amazing they can set the mood as well.
Our personal choice.
Well, we love them both however we believe that a tealight burner will heat your wax more than an electric burner and therefore give you the best scent throw from your scented wax. There are a number of ways to clean a tealight burner and are therefore easier to clean than most electrical burners. However with safety in mind we love the electric burners as there is no actual naked flame, we also like the fact that most electric burners can set the mood with the special effects and lights.
Whichever burner you choose please remember our advise and always read your burner's enclosed safety information and follow their instructions on safe use.
Once you have chosen your fragrance and depending how strong you would like your fragrance, break off some of your scented wax, or add your shaped melts, and place in either your tealight or electric burner. Be sure not to add to much as when wax starts to melt it may overflow. When using a tealight burner please place an unscented tealight inside the chamber at the bottom and light.
Within a short time the wax will start to melt and heat the fragrance up this will then start to release your chosen fragrance around your home.
Changing the used wax in a wax warmer without making a mess is a question everyone seems to want to know the answer to. Different scents will naturally be stronger than others and therefore may last slightly longer. Therefore we advise that when you can no longer smell the fragrance coming from the scented wax in you burner its time to replace with fresh wax or a new fragrance.
Are you are new to using wax melts and wax warmers ? Are unsure on how to remove the used wax from them without making a mess ? Then hopefully here at Halfpenny's Home Scents we have the answer for you.
Method 1.
Has your wax cooled and gone hard ? The easiest way to remove your old wax is to relight or turn your electric burner on again for a minute or so. This then starts to warm the wax back up, by warming the wax up again this will loosen the wax and you should be able to remove it as a solid piece without breaking. Once you have done this wipe whatever wax is remaining with a paper towel.
Method 2.
Has your burner been on and the wax is melted and in a liquid form ? This method is ideal for burgers without a removable lid or electrical burners. Getting two cotton balls use them to absorb the liquid wax and dispose of them, but please be careful as the wax will still be hot. Once you have absorbed the melted wax with the cotton balls, wipe whatever wax is remaining with a paper towel.
Method 3.
Use a piece of ribbon or string, first make sure your tealight is out or your electric burner is off. Then while your wax is in a liquid state place a piece of ribbon or string ( ribbon is better as it is wider ) into your wax. Allow the wax go cold and harden up, then slowly use the ribbon to pull out the solid piece of wax. If the wax does not come out in a solid piece and breaks then just pick out the broken pieces. Once the wax is removed wipe with a paper towel.
Method 4.
Use your freezer, this is one of the cleanest ways of removing used wax from your burner.
This method is not suitable if using a glass dish burner as it can cause them to crack or smash.
Quite simply once your wax has cooled and hardened in your burner, place it in the freezer for ten minutes. This will make the wax become solid and shrink, Allowing you to pop it out of your burner. Once the wax is removed wipe with a paper towel and allow the burner to come back up to room temperature before using again.
Please ensure you ALWAYS place your burner on a heat proof surface, they can get hot and could damage you surfaces. The most important, NEVER leave your burner unattended. NEVER use a burner on or near anything that might catch fire. ALWAYS keep burners out of the reach of children and pets. NEVER move the burner whilst lit. ONLY use a maximum tealight of 3-4 hours with any type of tealight burner, and ALWAYS remember to store wax melts e.c.t safely away from children and pets, ideally in a cool, dark and dry place.
CANDLES
Here at Halfpenny's Home Scents we offer a range of hand crafted & poured scented candles. All of our candles are hand poured in small batches using 100% natural soy wax & premium fragrance oils, these are a blend of natural plant-based oil called essentials oils and synthetic compounds which contain strong aromas. They are suitable for vegans and have NOT been tested on animals, they are also paraben free.
As soy wax is derived from the soy bean it is therefore 100% natural. It is a renewable, natural alternative to the more traditional products such as paraffin wax and beeswax. It is non-toxic and is kinder and safer for our respiratory systems. This is due to the fact that on it's own it doesn’t release any nasty toxins or carcinogens when it burns. When paired with paraben free fragrance oils, you can rest assured that soy candles are a choice better for your health and the environment.
Soy wax is easily washed off hands and clothes with soap and water and another great thing about using soy wax is even if your candle isn’t lit, soy wax holds the fragrance exceptionally well and has a great cold scent throw so you can still smell it even when not lit.
Candle usage tips.
Firstly wick trimming, before your first light make sure the wick is trimmed to around 5mm. Then after each burn you will often find that a small mushroom has formed at the end of the wick. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about it is just a build up of carbon. By trimming the wick before each burn to around 5mm and removing the mushroom this will give a consistent and nice clean and burn every time.
One of the most important tips we can give is to make sure for your first burn you allow a 3-4 hour burn. This prevents tunnelling and reduces wastage by using all of the wax .
Make sure that when you light your candle it is in a well ventilated area but not draughty. This is because any draughts can disturb and destabilise the consistent flame which in turn can affect the burn.
We also recommend rather than simply blowing your candle out to use a snuffer or by wick dipping. Wick dipping is done using a wick dipping tool or a piece of metal cutlery such as the end of a teaspoon, you are as simple as it sounds dipping the flame into the melt pool. These are safer options rather than simply blowing candles out as melt pools are hot and can burn, also by blowing candles out you could accidently blow the melt pool out over the side of the container onto surfaces, furniture or yourself.
Please remember when burning your candle for the first time, This is the most important burn. You should allow your candle to burn for around 3-4 hours as this allows the wax to melt into a pool. Strange as it sounds wax has a memory, therefore the first burn then acts as a memory for every other burn.
If you only allow 1-2 hours hours for your first burn before extinguishing this will create a small pool and your candle will not burn to the edges. Therefore on your next burn your candle will only burn as far as it did on the first burn. This in turn creates a tunnelling effect, this leaves excess wax around the sides of the container which is then wasted. This in turn results in a shortened burn time and can cause problems when lighting at a later point.
Please ensure you ALWAYS place your candle on a heat proof surface as candle containers can get hot and could damage you surfaces. Please DO NOT allow your candle to burn below 5mm at the bottom of the container. Once your wax reached about 5 mm from the bottom of the container, Please resist the urge to continue burning it until there's no wax left as glass jar or container can become too hot, causing it to break or shatter and possibly causing a fire as well as other damage. The most important, Please NEVER leave your candle unattended. NEVER burn a candle on or near anything that might catch fire and ALWAYS keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.
Why do you use soy wax & what are the benefits of using it?
Here at Halfpenny's Home Scents we offer a range of hand crafted & poured scented candles, wax melts all made with 100% natural soy wax & premium fragrance oils, these are a blend of natural plant-based oil called essentials oils and synthetic compounds which contain strong aromas. They are suitable for vegans and have NOT been tested on animals, they are also paraben free. We also have a natural range, these have no added colours or mica powders as we know that this sort of thing isn't everyone's cup of tea.
All of our candles and wax melts are hand poured in small batches using soy wax and our premium fragrances. Soy is a vegetable wax and is used regularly for candle making as well as to produce wax melts and tarts amongst other things. Soy wax is derived from the soy bean and is therefore 100% natural. It is a renewable, natural alternative to the more traditional products such as paraffin wax and beeswax.
Soy wax candles have a lower melting point than paraffin wax and many other types of wax, This in turn allows them to burn up to 50% longer than a paraffin wax candle.
Soy candles will burn cleaner than traditional paraffin wax candles. This is because paraffin wax is also known to release soot, soot can damage and affect the walls of your home and be bad for your health. As soy wax burns cleaner there will be no soot or carbon marks left on your walls.
Paraffin is made using harmful fossil fuels, which are not only bad for the environment but are also harmful to our health. As soy wax is completely plant based it is a natural wax, it is non-toxic and is kinder and safer for our respiratory systems and releases nothing harmful into the environment. This is due to the fact that on it's own it doesn’t release any nasty toxins or carcinogens when it burns and when paired with paraben free fragrance oils, you can rest assured that soy candles are a choice better for your health and the environment.
Sizzlers
What are sizzlers?
Sizzlers are little aroma crystals, also known as simmering granules. These are a natural salt based product with added colour which have been infused in our premium fragrance oils. These are a popular alternative to wax melts, as they are used just like your wax melts in a burner. Sizzlers are a cleaner alternative to wax melts and are easier to clean. Sizzlers don’t melt like wax melts as they remain as crystal granules giving off a fragrance when heated.
Sizzlers are versatile little bursts of fragrance with many of our customers using them around their home. Some customers put them in small hessian/organza bags and hang them in the wardrobe, draws or anywhere else you can think of hanging them. Some customers even place them in the bottoms of their bins to help it smell fresh.
As with our wax melts & candles our sizzlers are made using premium granules and premium fragrance oils which are suitable for vegans, have NOT been tested on animals and are paraben free.
Sizzlers are used pretty much in the same way as wax melts, you can choose the strength of fragrance. Just add 1 teaspoon of the scented sizzlers of your choice to your burner for a mild fragrance, or for a stronger fragrance use 2 teaspoons. Pop a tealight in the bottom of your burner, as the granules heat up the scent fills the room.
You can get multiple burns from our sizzlers, when you notice that you can no longer smell the scent it's time to change the granules. Once the fragrance from the salt crystals has evaporated all it leaves is the salt residue in the top of your burner.
When your burner has cooled and the salt granules are cold, simply empty the granules into a bin wipe the top of your burner with a paper towel then just top up and away you go again.
Why not try what some of our customers do? Place used sizzlers into a small hessian/organza bag and hang in wardrobes, draws even the bathroom. However we advise not to place to close to clothing.
So if you are looking for an easier way to get your favourite fragrance around your home try these little crystal gems.
Scented Sizzlers are safe, clean and simple to use, however please ensure you ALWAYS place your burner on a heat proof surface as they can get hot and could damage you surfaces. The most important, NEVER leave your burner unattended. NEVER use a burner on or near anything that might catch fire. ALWAYS keep burners out of the reach of children and pets. NEVER move the burner whilst lit. ONLY use a maximum tealight of 3-4 hours with any type of tealight burner and ALWAYS remember to keep Sizzlers safely away from children and pets, ideally in an cool, dark and dry place.
REED DIFFUSERS
What are reed diffusers?
For people who want a flame and heat free fragrance option reed diffusers have become very popular in recent years. Therefore here at Halfpenny's Home Scents we added these to our list of home fragrance products. One of the great things about reed diffusers is that they can scent a room without using a candle, we find that families with pets or small children prefer reed diffusers as they consider them safer as there is no flame.
A reed diffuser is a container that has fragrance oil that has been mixed with "Augeo" a base solution. Reeds are then put into the bottle which gradually draw up the fragrance solution. This then evaporates into the air.
The strength of the fragrance depends upon how many reeds that you add to your diffuser. Normally the greater number of reeds that you place into the diffuser the stronger the scent. If in a larger room, you may need to add more reeds than you would normally use for a smaller room. However, remember that the more reeds that you use, the quicker your diffuser will be used up.
Unscrew the cap from the bottle, remove the safety plug and screw the cap back on. Place your reeds in the bottle and space them out. Then once every 1-2 weeks turn the reeds, we believe that it is best to do this individually or 2 reeds at a time rather than all at once as we believe this promotes a longer lasting fragrance.
Once used either wash bottle out and recycle or you can purchase a refill bottle from us. If you purchase a different fragrance in a refill be sure to purchase a new set of reeds.
Reed diffusers are safe as they are a flame and heat-free fragrance option, however please ensure you DO NOT place your diffuser directly onto polished, painted, plastic or leather surfaces, or on top of electrical equipment. The most important, HANDLE your diffuser with care avoiding getting any of the contents on your skin or eyes. If you do, wash IMMEDIATELY with plenty of water and seek medical advice if required. DO NOT place near naked flames, heat sources or in direct sunlight, Although none of the contents in our diffuser bottles are flammable reeds are. ALWAYS remember to safely keep reed diffusers away from children and pets.
CLP Compliant.
All of our products are CLP compliant and have the labels on the packaging as well as in some cases on the product itself, this is a legal requirement. CLP Labelling is a EU and UK regulation which requires hazardous chemicals to be classified, labelled and packaged. Although the Soy wax we use in or candles and wax melts or the base mix we use in our reed diffusers and room sprays is not hazardous, as with ANY scented candle, wax melt, room spray or diffuser on the market there may be ingredients in the fragrance oil that may be hazardous. Please for you own safety do not purchase any candles, melts, room sprays or diffusers that don't have a CLP label.
